Villa target commits to Benfica

Aston Villa’s hopes of landing Benfica full back Nelson have been dashed after the player pledged his future to the Portuguese club.

Nelson reportedly headed Villa boss Martin O’Neill’s wish-list to replace the out-going Olof Mellberg and a fee of around £8 million had been touted.

But the 25-year-old insists he has no intention of leaving Benfica and will now look to negotiate a new deal with the club.

Nelson told Portuguese newspaper Record: "It is true I went far enough to consider leaving, but now I intend to negotiate my contract with the club [Benfica].

"I have received some offers but none have come to anything and everything points to me staying.

"It is good that clubs appreciate my work, but I want to stay here under better economic conditions."

Football Poll

Who should coach the GB football team in 2012?

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“I'm glad he's staying!! For a few weeks there I thought we were going to get ripped off TWICE in 1 summer! Robbie Keane is a very good footballer but worth £20million i'm not sure. £18million for Barry and £12million for Alonso!! Jesus is it just me or does EVERYONE else see that as terrible business?? Rafa has a plan that he obviously thought Barry would be the perfect cog in his midfield machine but maybe next year, maybe not. I'm not sure about Riera but i'm willing to give him a chance like he deserves!! I hope we win the league this year but Chelsea are looking very strong.”
