McCartney commits future to Hammers

Northern Ireland international George McCartney has signed a new five-year contract with West Ham.

McCartney was linked with a return to Sunderland earlier this month but has ended speculation over his future by extending his stay at Upton Park until 2013.

The 27-year-old moved south from The Black Cats in 2006 and has gone on to establish himself as Alan Curbishley’s first choice left back in a well-drilled Hammers defence.

Last season McCartney also added goals to his game, scoring once against Bolton at Upton Park – his only strike in 226 career appearances.

Who should coach the GB football team in 2012?

Setanta readers' comment of the day

“I'm glad he's staying!! For a few weeks there I thought we were going to get ripped off TWICE in 1 summer! Robbie Keane is a very good footballer but worth £20million i'm not sure. £18million for Barry and £12million for Alonso!! Jesus is it just me or does EVERYONE else see that as terrible business?? Rafa has a plan that he obviously thought Barry would be the perfect cog in his midfield machine but maybe next year, maybe not. I'm not sure about Riera but i'm willing to give him a chance like he deserves!! I hope we win the league this year but Chelsea are looking very strong.”
