Bridges: Jones is Sunderland's Adebayor
by Adam Marshall, 23 July 2008
Former Sunderland striker Michael Bridges has given the thumbs up to Roy Keane's raid on Tottenham but told Setanta Sports that he feels a striker needs to be the Irishman's priority.
Bridges, co-commentating on The Black Cats' latest pre-season friendly against Vitoria Setubal, is pleased to see Teemu Tainio signed up and Pascal Chimbonda also on his way to the Stadium of Light.
With Younes Kaboul deliberating over the switch, Bridges feels Malbranque would be the star pick of the Spurs quartet.
"I think it'd be tremendous," he revealed to Setanta Sports. "Malbranque, I thought, was one of Tottenham's best performers last season bar Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov.
"It'll be a massive boost to the Sunderland squad if Roy can get hold of them.
"Once he gets the signing of the Tottenham players out of the way, you know his main priority is a striker.
"Jones last season was similar to an Emmanuel Adebayor. He was hard to play against. Alright, he only got seven goals but look at the amount of balls he played to other members of the team.
"All credit to him. He'll be a massive miss until the truth comes out on his injury. Let's hope he's not out too long as he's one of the main reasons they stayed up.
"You've got to think who Keane will go for. There was some talk of Diego Forlan last year but I'm not sure who else.
"There has been talk of another Tottenham boy, Darren Bent, but what price are they going to have to pay for him as Spurs are going to want to get a lot of money back for him.
"But it'd be a massive boost for Sunderland if they get the Spurs boys and they're playing Tottenham early on."
